MUSIC TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION
Music Tech is a fantastic, enriching and challenging subject, but also one that has a particular set of needs to deliver well.
My view is simple - to improve the experience of teaching music technology for both teachers and students, sharing my experience as a music producer, teacher & senior examiner.
The skills of music technology are not always easy to come by - many music degrees and PGCEs do not cover them much. It requires the same level of dedication as learning an instrument, and quite a complex one at that. The ready availability of sequencers like Cubase and Logic and the ease with which they can be used to put together musical ideas is also a false representation of what music tech is.
The fundamental approaches used throughout music production come from the techniques of recording technology, and without a knowledge of how stereo mixes are created from start to finish the learning curve will soon become a learning cul-de-sac.
Whilst there are an ever increasing number of recording studios, there is an ever decreasing number of truly professional ones, so this avenue of on the job learning is becoming harder to access.
Even once the skills are in place, the A level course itself can be a minefield to navigate. It's hard to imagine a more complex qualification to run or to study.
